I’ve always wanted to go to the Belcourt in Nashville…

When is something mostly for free? When is it mostly something that is paid for? It is every really apparent? Is it this, or is it that? Can it be both simultaneously? If everything functions like drug dealers, and I give you a consistent taste for free, will you come back and pay for a regular dose? I am closing in on my goal that I wanted to hit in order to put this experiment into gear. It’s flown by, but it’s taken two years.

I think there’s a lot more we can do with this platform to help build a non-dependent cinema ecosystem prioritizing the artist, but I need some help. If I can convert a few of you who currently enjoy the free milk that we need to buy a few cows, we might be able to have a farm. Hope’s hoping. Consider upgrading to paid subscriber status. With your help you well soon be able to see what you have funded.

Producers United just made the world better for Career Producers.

One small step at a time leads to big changes. Break out the champagne but keep on keeping on. There is a great deal still to be done. Health care will help Career Producers survive. And maybe those GSPs that haven’t yet provided, will wake up and want to be on the right side of history.

(FWIW, I am a member of Producers United)

But if you are like me, and really only want to make movies, the way to think about this is not an all or nothing proposition but more of a “both/and”. You can use the growth of The Creator Economy without making it all you do. And yeah, there are a lot of jobs and people needed in the field. Evan’s recommendation for you to focus on finding them — and to start listening to the audience. Stop relying on the old assumptions. Or as Evan says “Be The CEO of your own shit”

And if you are not already subscribed to his newsletter, I suggest you don’t wait any longer. Even the free version is going to help you get your head on straight. And after all, he’s doing one of the things I’ve most frequently requested… and now he uses it in his description too!

Everyone’s doing it: the rise of film-focused Substacks

Yup, it’s happening. You know you felt it but here’s the proof. This thing we’ve been doing for the last two years, is now officially a thing. Stephen Follows has the proof right here

https://stephenfollows.com/the-data-behind-the-rise-of-film-indutsry-substacks/

There is a ton of good info to see, particularly if you are considering launching your own substack. Of course I have a bit of advise for you, if you are.

That said, I particularly enjoyed seeing this nugget. And thank you for all that do recommend me. I will return the favor once I start reading yours too.
