Love everything about this. We’ve been behind the scenes in Hollywood for a long time and have been asking ourselves the same questions. So much of our social impact work has been disrupted by these same trends/factors. And it’s been hard to know what our place is in the creator economy of today, while also recognizing it’s the most important way of building engaged audiences who care about impact films. Just launched our own substack for these reasons.
Thank you for this — if we don’t come up with new solutions and think differently, we will lose one of the most powerful cultural forces we have. I know a lot of people that will resonate with this post — am definitely sharing!
"I started focusing on who might value what I have to offer. The goal wasn’t to chase trends or hack virality. It was to build a bridge to the people who might actually care. And the truth is, they’re out there. You just have to show up consistently enough for them to find you."
What a phenomenal post, Ellis. There is so much wisdom and your sincere, not cynical, insistence on making your voice heard is incredibly inspiring. Like many , I have things parked inside agencies , awaiting that attachment that will make the thing go. Thank you for this authentic and - importantly - actionable post. It’s generous to share this. Everyone who finds you and this post, will be lifted up and perhaps recognize that the dinosaur system is not designed for dreamers who love movies.
So very well said. You captured such nuance and detail of a lot of the filmmaking journey - your insights are brilliant and a kick in the pants. Cheers to all of us building our own tables and taking turns throwing some dinner parties!
Thanks, Ellis, for your thought-provoking post. Yes, I agree with you, we need to work in a way that people, young and old, rediscover the cinema. It is not by remaking everything that worked before. We need solutions to the problems we face in world today. If the cinema were to actually offer possible solutions to those problems, people would attend the theaters, like they fill the streets in protest, or block the road to get their "In-N-Out." We must not only show the solutions but be them. That is the brand that will bring us into a beautiful cinematic future. And, you as a young man, are part of that future.
yes. congrats on this. great post.
Thanks David! And thanks for subbing to the YouTube!

Great perspective! Love the idea of starting small, focusing on providing value, and building one brick at a time.
