And now… on with the show!
🍿 Discover Fresh, Hot Film: The Popcorn List: Pop Up Series is Playing on A Screen Near You
We’re checking in with our friends at The Popcorn List about halfway into the Pop Up Series, which as you know, is supported in part by Hope for Film! ICYMI, you can read about the series here.
Of the 28 in-person sneak-previews for IF THAT MOCKINGBIRD DON’T SING (Dir. Sadie Bones), NEW WAVE (Dir. Elizabeth Ai) and THE EVERYTHING POT (Dir. Sherise Dorf), 21 screenings remain (MOCKINGBIRD in fact, screens tonight, at the Sidewalk Film Center in Birmingham.) And the Virtual Pop Up, featuring ASHIMA (Dir. Kenji Tsukamoto), BROOKLYN, MINNESOTA (Dir. Jessica Blank, Erik Jensen), CLOCKED (Dir. Noah Salzman), EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IS YOURS (Dir. Tatyana Tenenbaum), and TO KILL A WOLF (Dir. Kelsey Taylor) kicks off its 5-day nationwide VOD event September 25th.
So, what’s it really like to promote 8 independent films, across 10 cities and virtually, via a six-week collaborative marketing campaign, you ask? (Shout out to Tepper in the Kinema for Filmmakers recent post for this pro-tip: “you think you’re doing enough, it’s never enough.” Bam!)
Well, we’re gonna find out. The organizers are tracking everything - from press breaks and newsletters, to extensive social media metrics, to pre-sales, box office reports and an audience survey. They’re live-documenting some of their experience along the way in a weekly Substack, and will also be transparently reporting on the whole process later this fall, starting at Gotham Week.
There will no doubt be several NonDē lessons learned - from audiences, from filmmakers, from cinemas - that will shape the future of this operational improvement to support dozens more indie films to come (in fact…those future movies are on the festival circuit as we speak.)
I hope that you’ll also support The Popcorn List - along with me, Facet, Eventive, Simple DCP and Product of Culture - by attending a screening or grabbing a ticket or Popcorn Pass to watch all five virtual films ($25 w/ promo code - see below.)
