Stop Financing Movies (Unless You Finance Marketing & Operational Improvements Too)!
How To Build The Non-Dependent Film Ecosystem, Pt 3
Where are you today? We over here in HopeForFilmland are still working away on our grand list of the necessary conditions for the new non-dependent film ecosystem. I find it kind of surprising. This is clearly what we need most, but it is actually one of the things no one actually wants to discuss (or perhaps read). My two posts on this so far haven’t hit my average rates of engagement. Maybe you don’t actually like the bite-sized portions I diced it up into. Maybe I should go back to the long list feast sort of post instead?
I had hoped you’d be digging your own mine. Getting closer to the gold. The quick recap of my two prior posts show us where we’ve been would be these initial eleven dance steps. Born to boogie, yeah?
First 11 of 20+ necessary concepts & conditions for the new non-dependent film ecosystem
1. End anti-competitive practices of GSPs (government regulation)
2. Sustainability is the primary goal;
3. Deepen appreciation & comfort in the feeling for and expression of “art”
4. Artists Bill of Rights
5. Avoid binary “either/or” thinking; it’s “both/and”.
6. Aim for both excellence and the spirit of the perpetually “amateur”;
7. Embrace aesthetic & narrative risk taking
8. Embrace innovation & encourage experimentation in adoption of new platforms;
9. Leaders lead and communities empower.
10. Execute the operational improvements that have been neglected.
11. Think beyond one film at a time.
They say both god and the devil are in the details. One shouldn’t snack on bullet points alone. You’ll have to go back to post #1 and #2 to find the substance. Curious bedfellows, right? Or not, maybe. If we don’t create friction, can we generate the necessary energy?
I am excited to share these next seven moves. This IS the work that needs to be done. We don’t need another movie. We need a better system to make those movies in. We can’t do it alone. It’s best we all come to the table prepared and hungry. I wish that a solution came in a pill, but I think if you want to get up to speed, you are going to have to dig in and read. Read, baby, read!
