“Hope” is the thing with feathers

By Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.

I had initially placed this poem just to illustrate a bit more how much we need hope. With LA burning though, I was not going to publish today. Just speaking of cinema alone, feels out of sync with what’s happening on the ground. Will LA recover? Do the fires and the neglect they represent in terms of the larger context truly speak of and not just illustrate the times we live in? Vanessa work early this morning well before dawn. I was relieved that I had not planned to post today. Or so I thought. I thought this post was set for tomorrow — but it wasn’t it was set for today. I just hadn’t scheduled it correctly. But then when I went and looked at it, there Emily Dickinson was. Little bird. Strangest sea. She articulated so much.

We all need hope. And we need our art and our musings to keep it alive. Disasters bring out our best sides. We are compassionate creatures. And we know how to take action when the time comes. We are inspiring. I can’t depend on such disasters to remind me of that.

Let me know if you come across any other good songs, sayings, or musings on '“hope”. We need them more than ever. These times are terrible. The wars rage. We can’t ignore them. We need hope to get through them, and such poems and works are important things to share. I hope you like them too.

So what do I have in store for you on this morning?
