The prognosis for the non-corporate filmmakers of all breeds isn’t looking too good anytime soon. The wise will find opportunity in the hopelessness. And for those that are willing to do the bigwigs bidding, best gulp down that rosé in a single swallow as the shaggy sunset will soon shatter your greying days. Soon it all will be gone, gone, gone. Why? Because we are all such suckers.
The word I heard last week was — is — evidently three of the Global Streaming Platforms (GSPs) have made offers on new film projects with the oh-so-compelling offer of no minimum guarantee (MGs). Yup. You got that right: they now want to pay you NOTHING for your work. At least not upfront.
