Forgive me. I have eaten the plums.

You’re special. You don’t belong with all the rest. And that’s a good thing.

Special movies suffer when they are grouped alongside “general” movies... you know… “content”. The special ones disappear — essentially and effectively… cancelled. But you can stop that… sort of.

Non-participation and limited access is a better business strategy for most films these days. Seriously: stop going to where the action is. Let them be them and you be you. Get smaller and you will have more impact.

If you are what they once called an “indie”, something with a truly unique perspective, if you are that film that will never make $10M or more at the box office, something that is provocative or daring, that dares to speak truth to power, that just has a real authorial voice, you shouldn’t even try to belong anymore. At least not with all the others.

I think there is a better model for many of us, and it is predicated on NOT belonging. Don’t be where everyone else is. They detract for what makes you so darn beautiful and enticing. That’s the part of you that we want to see. And we need to give it room to breathe. Room to grow. Get some air — that’s the better way.
