do we know which way the wind really blows?

Someone somewhere once said to me: “We were standing in the dinosaur’s footprint and couldn’t see we were headed to extinction.” I suspect they borrowed from someone else. It was the sort of visual analogy that lodged a concept into me, one that has become one of my favorite themes to bring up to resonate in the work I am involved with. Like many things, I credit Vanessa with helping me identify it more clearly. I think it is not only a crucial understanding for us to hold, it speaks of why we have trouble seeing such understandings.

Why don’t we think more clearly?

Our ideas, behaviors, and actions are rarely truly our own, but come from:

the system we are in and the system within us.

One of the main ramifications of this is when thinking about the future, we can’t help but compare it to the past. Even though what we once had may be now long gone, the yearning for what no longer can be, influences the pursuit of what is now before us.

HFF’s The Five: O1.19.25
